Energy Tips and Links

TIP #1 -- Did you know?

The energy used in the average home can be responsible for more than twice the greenhouse gas emissions of the average car. When you use less energy at home, you reduce greenhouse gas emissions from power plants and help protect our environment from the risks of global climate change. By looking to ENERGY STAR® for best practices and products, you can reduce your energy use and save up to 30%, or $600 annually on average, on your utility bills (currently averaging around $1,900 per year). Visit www.energystar.gov for more information.

TIP #2 Home Energy Checklist for Action

Here's a simple checklist from the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) Consumer Guide to Home Energy Savings. Visit www.aceee.org for more information

  1. Turn down the temperature of your water heater to the warm setting (120°F).
  2. Check if your water heater has an insulating blanket. An insulating blanket will pay for itself in one year or less!
  3. Start using energy-saving settings on refrigerators, dishwashers, washing machines, and clothes dryers.
  4. Survey your incandescent lights for opportunities to replace them with compact fluorescents (CFLs). These lamps can save three-quarters of the electricity used by incandescents.
  5. Check the age and condition of your major appliances, especially the refrigerator. You may want to replace it with a more energy-efficient model before it dies.
  6. Clean or replace furnace, air-conditioner and heat-pump filters.

TIP #3 Read the Energy Savers Guide

Developed by the US Department of Energy this guide offers tips on saving energy and money at home. Visit http://www1.eere.energy.gov/consumer/tips/about.html to read the guide.
